For the days that took years

01 · The world of pilots

Every kind of pilot. Every kind of person.

Captains and cargo crews, bush pilots and rescue pilots, controllers, mechanics, students and the ones who flew for forty years. We make gifts for all of them, and for the people who wave them off.

Seen from the jump seat, a silver-haired Mexican captain points at the overhead panel beside her red-haired first officer as snowy peaks glow at dusk.

Airline crews

The front of the airplane

Behind the calm voice on the speaker, years of checkrides and early alarms.

In light rain at night, a bearded cargo pilot in a high-visibility vest shines a flashlight into the engine of a freighter during his walk-around.

The night shift

While the world sleeps

The medicine, the mail and the spare parts, flown through the night.

A red-and-white rescue helicopter hovers beside a snowy Alpine ridge as a rescuer on a long line reaches a waving climber.

When called

The ones who come

Air ambulance, rescue and firefighting crews, first to arrive.

A Maori float pilot sits on the float of her seaplane at an alpine lake dock in New Zealand with a morning coffee, wearing the Single Engine Sea Tee in Chili (PG-0151)

Far places

Floats, gliders and grass strips

Most of the world’s pilots fly small airplanes a long way from any airport.

A Ghanaian ramp agent laughs on his pushback tug beside an airliner nose at dawn, wearing the Small Truck Big Push Tee in Mustard (PG-0269)

On the ground

Nobody flies alone

Controllers, mechanics and instructors, on whom every flight depends.

A Japanese grandmother and flight instructor holds her grandson's logbook after his first solo at a small airfield, wearing the Grandma Signed My Logbook Tee in Orchid (PG-0281)

The families

The ones who wait at arrivals

Partners, kids and grandparents who learned to read a flight tracker.

02 · The moments

For the days a logbook remembers

From a child at the airport fence to the final approach, a flying life is built one entry at a time. Each of these days took years of work, and each one deserves to be marked.

A father in a turban carries his daughter on his shoulders at the airport fence as she points at an airliner overhead; he wears the Dad Can Name It Tee in Sapphire (PG-0322)

It starts at the fence

The dream

The kid who waves at every plane and knows each one by its sound.

A student pilot and her young instructor walk around a small trainer before her first lesson; she wears the Holding Short Tee in Flo Blue (PG-0080) and he wears the Now I Sit on the Right Tee in Butter (PG-0166)

The first lesson

Hands on the controls

A discovery flight, a grin that lasts all week, and a logbook with one entry.

A flight instructor throws her arms up as her student climbs out of the trainer after his first solo, wearing the First Student Soloed Tee in Island Reef (PG-0336)

The first solo

For the day they fly alone

The instructor steps out, the door closes, and the rest is theirs.

A new pilot shakes the examiner's hand after passing her checkride, wearing the Checkride Passed Tee in Blossom (PG-0052)

The checkride

The long morning

An examiner, a checklist, and a license that took a year of weekends.

A young first officer walks into the terminal at dawn for her first trip

The first job

A uniform and a crew bag

A first trip on the line, and a family watching the flight tracker all night.

A Vietnamese pilot holds up her new four-stripe captain epaulettes on the balcony while her husband claps and laughs. She wears the One Seat to the Left in Violet (PG-0055).

The captain upgrade

The fourth stripe

The move to the left seat. At most airlines, four stripes on the sleeve mean captain.

An airline captain at home in the evening after a trip, his four-stripe jacket on the chair, wearing the Four Stripes Tee in Moss (PG-0112)

The long career

Thousands of hours

Night freight, early shows, birthdays over the ocean. A career the family flies too.

The last flight

Final approach

A water salute on the taxiway and a crew room that knows what it means.

03 · Who is it for

Often, the pilot gift is chosen by someone who loves a pilot

A husband hugs his wife, an airline first officer in uniform, at the departures curb, wearing the Curbside Goodbye Tee in Chalky Mint (PG-0373)

For a partner

The one who flies

For the partner who leaves before dawn and comes home with stories. A gift that says: we are proud of you.

A proud father hugs his daughter, a brand-new private pilot holding her certificate at a desert airfield, while she wears the Temporary Certificate Tee in Blue Spruce (PG-0345)

For a parent

The newest pilot

For the son or daughter who just soloed, passed the checkride or earned the license. The first of many.

An airline pilot mom laughs on the sofa with her two kids after opening their gift on a winter evening, wearing the Wings Level Mom Tee in Lagoon Blue (PG-0101)

From the kids

Mom or Dad, the pilot

For the parent who explains clouds at breakfast and knows every plane by its sound.

A Moroccan flight attendant in a hijab and long-sleeve layer laughs with a white-haired pilot colleague over espresso on a layover morning. She wears the Cart Has the Right of Way in Chalky Mint (PG-0252).

For the crew

Colleagues and friends

For an upgrade, a new type rating, a retirement flight. The crew room will know what it means.

04 · From the flight deck

Things even pilot families may not know

01

Why “Roger”

In the old radio alphabet, R was “Roger”, and R stood for “received”. The word stuck long after the alphabet changed.

02

Mayday

The distress call comes from the French “m’aidez”, help me. It is always said three times.

03

Runway 27

A runway’s number is its compass heading with the last zero dropped. Runway 27 points west, to 270 degrees.

04

Zulu time

Aviation runs on one clock, UTC, called Zulu. A flight plan never has to ask what time zone you mean.

05

The orange box

The “black box” flight recorders are painted bright orange, so they can be found.

06

The shirttail

In many flight schools, a student’s shirttail is cut off after the first solo, signed and dated, and pinned to the wall.

A nod of thanks

A gift is opened the moment it is recognized.

PILOTS… A GIFT TO HUMANITY

05 · Why we exist

Tell them what they are

When we say a pilot is a gift, we are not talking about an airline seat. We are talking about one of the few human beings still trained to keep the world functioning, in calm weather and in chaos, while the rest of us go on with our day.

We tip the driver who took us twenty minutes to the airport. We do not nod at the person who took us across an ocean.

Everything we make is a way of saying it out loud: we see you, and we know what you and your family carry.

Civilization is not held up by speeches. It is held up by skill that arrives before the cameras do.
