About the design

A one-color round aviation badge t-shirt with I Don’t Need Therapy, I Need Flight Time around a high-wing trainer and mountains. Printed on the Comfort Colors 1717 garment-dyed tee, soft, relaxed and made to fade a little with every wash. An easy gift for a pilot, a student pilot or anyone who stops to watch airplanes.

The shirt

Every Pilots.gift tee is printed on the Comfort Colors 1717, a 6.1 oz heavyweight cut from 100% ring-spun cotton. It is garment-dyed, which means the shirt is sewn first and dyed afterward, so the color settles into the fiber instead of sitting on top of it. That is why it feels broken in the first time you put it on, and why it keeps getting softer rather than wearing thin. The cut is relaxed rather than close. The collar is ribbed and topstitched, and twill tape runs shoulder to shoulder so the shirt holds its shape through years of washing. Because every garment takes the dye a little differently, no two are exactly alike — a small variation that is part of how this cotton is made, not a flaw in it. We chose this blank for a simple reason: a design worth keeping deserves a shirt worth keeping.

Care and fade

A word about the color. Most of our shirt colors are pigment-dyed, which is what gives them their depth and their slightly uneven, lived-in surface. Pigment dye is meant to move: it will lighten a little over the first few washes, then settle — and it will settle differently on your shirt than on anyone else's. That is the character of the garment rather than a fault in it. To keep it at its best, wash cold, inside out, with like colors, and tumble dry low. Skip the bleach, and skip the fabric softener: softener coats the cotton and works against the very thing that makes this shirt feel the way it does. Shade variation between one garment and the next, and between the color on your screen and the one that arrives, is inherent to pigment dyeing.

Fit and sizing

The 1717 is cut relaxed and runs generously through the body — it is made to hang, not to cling. For a closer fit, take one size down; for the roomy look it was designed for, take your usual size. Because it is garment-dyed, it has already done most of its shrinking before it reaches you, so expect very little movement after the first wash. The measurements below are the garment laid flat: body length is taken from the highest point of the shoulder straight down, and chest width is measured across the chest one inch below the armhole — double it for the full circumference. Allow ±1.25" on length and ±1" on chest.
