About the design

A funny pilot long-sleeve t-shirt with a hangar and an airplane in morning fog under a clock and the line Burns Off by Ten, the Pilot’s Morning Promise, a gift for weekend pilots and their families. Printed on the Comfort Colors 6014 garment-dyed long sleeve, soft, relaxed and made to fade a little with every wash, in navy ink on light colors and warm cream ink on deeper ones.

The long sleeve

Our long sleeve is the Comfort Colors 6014, the same 6.1 oz heavyweight ring-spun US cotton as the tee with sleeves added. It is garment-dyed after it is sewn, so the color settles into the fiber and the shirt feels broken in from the first wear, and it has already done most of its shrinking before it reaches you. The collar is ribbed and topstitched, twill tape runs shoulder to shoulder, the body is seamless, and the cuffs are ribbed so the sleeves stay put when you push them up. The fit is relaxed. It is the shirt for cold preflights, early show times and long evenings in the hangar.

Care and fade

Most of our long-sleeve colors are pigment-dyed, which is what gives them their depth and their slightly uneven, lived-in surface; a few, Black and White among them, use reactive dye instead. Pigment dye is meant to move: it will lighten a little over the first few washes, then settle — and settle differently on your shirt than on anyone else's. Wash cold, inside out, with like colors, and tumble dry low. Skip the bleach and skip the fabric softener, which coats the cotton and works against the softness you bought it for. Shade variation between one garment and the next, and between the color on your screen and the one that arrives, is inherent to pigment dyeing.

Fit and sizing

The 6014 is cut relaxed and runs generously through the body, like the tee. Take your usual size for the roomy look it was designed for, or one size down for a closer fit. Garment dyeing means most of the shrinkage has already happened. The measurements below are the garment laid flat: body length from the highest point of the shoulder straight down, chest width across the chest one inch below the armhole — double it for the full circumference — and sleeve length from the center back of the neck to the cuff.
