For the winter flyer, from a partner or the hangar neighbors. A cold morning, a turn of the key, and the engine caught on the very first blade.
About the design
A winter pilot sweatshirt with an airplane nose-on, a turning propeller and frost and the line Caught on the First Blade, Cold Morning, First Try, a gift for pilots. Printed on the Comfort Colors 1566 garment-dyed sweatshirt, heavyweight garment-dyed fleece, in navy ink on light colors and warm cream ink on deeper ones.
The same design as our tee, design no. PG-0393, on the sweatshirt for winter. Click here for the tee.
The Comfort Colors 1566 is our tee’s idea in a heavier cloth. It is 9.5 oz three-end fleece, 80/20 ring-spun cotton and polyester with a 100% ring-spun cotton face, which is what gives the outside its dry, matte handle while the inside stays soft. Like everything in the Comfort Colors line it is garment-dyed after it is sewn, so the color sits in the cloth and deepens rather than flattens. The ribbed collar, cuffs and waistband hold their shape instead of stretching out. The shoulders are rolled forward, there are proper side seams rather than a tube, and twill tape runs across the back of the neck. The fit is relaxed. It is the sweatshirt for a January preflight, a cold hangar and the long drive home from the airport.
Shipping & returns

Care and fade
Most 1566 colors are pigment-dyed; Orchid and White are the exceptions and use reactive dye. Pigment dye is what gives the rest their depth and their slightly uneven surface, and it is meant to move: expect a little lightening over the first few washes, then a color that settles and stays. Wash cold, inside out, with like colors, and tumble dry low. No bleach, and no fabric softener — softener coats the fleece and dulls exactly the hand you paid for. Shade variation from one garment to the next is inherent to pigment dyeing, so the sweatshirt that arrives will be its own.
Fit and sizing
The 1566 is cut relaxed and sits roomy through the body and shoulder. Take your usual size for the fit it was designed for, or one size down if you prefer it closer. Garment dyeing means most of the shrinkage has already happened before it reaches you. The measurements below are the garment laid flat: body length from the high point of the shoulder, chest width one inch below the armhole — double it for the full circumference — and sleeve length from the center back of the neck to the cuff. Allow ±1" on length and ±¾" on chest.
